Director's Message

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic over the past three years, the HKB has successfully organized and coordinated over 10 cruises and field sampling trips to the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. We currently have 101 affiliated members from 23 universities and institutes from Hong Kong, the mainland, and overseas (USA, UK, Germany, France, Israel, and Australia). There are 62 completed research projects funded by HKB via the Open Collaborative Research Fund or Operation Fund. Our members have 11 patents and published over 370 SCI journal articles over the past three years, including many in high-impact journals.

We also strengthen our capacity to drive translational research outcomes into real-life applications. To accelerate knowledge transfer from academia to the industry, HKB has initiated five high-level summits and one sharing workshop in strengthening “government-university-industry” cooperation to promote the marine industry and economy, benefitting the communities in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area in general. These programs have enhanced the image of HKB and GML in the society.

As the epidemic situation is now behind us, I believe we will have more fruitful years ahead. With the support of the HKSAR government, HKUST, and GML, I am confident that HKB will become a world-class marine science and technology research platform and a talent cultivation center, benefiting the sustainable development of the blue economy.
