Introduction of Hong Kong Branch
The Hong Kong Branch of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) collaboration agreement was signed in 2018 under joint support of the Guangzhou Science and Technology Innovation Committee, Innovation Academy for South China Sea Ecology and Environmental Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The Hong Kong Branch of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) was established at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2019.
China is a huge maritime country with vast sea area and abundant marine resources. The Greater Bay Area is one of the largest port areas and a center of marine industry in the world. To date, marine ecosystems and biological resources in the South China Sea and the Greater Bay Area have experienced substantial impacts from human activities and climate change. The establishment of the Hong Kong Branch will strengthen the current joint effort in advancing/promoting marine science and technology innovation, help us optimize regional marine industry structure, explore new arenas for blue economy development, and promote marine economic development of the Greater Bay Area.
The Hong Kong Branch will serve as a world-class marine science and technology research platform, and integrate local and international marine science and technology talents to conduct cutting-edge research that will benefit development of the Greater Bay Area. The Hong Kong Branch will train talent young marine scientists, facilitate the sharing of marine research resources and scientific data, and make continuous and significant contributions to the development of marine science and technology in the Greater Bay Area.
